Terrence Nelson has an ear for talent. He’s been at Universal Music Group (Interscope Records) for approximately 5 years and since his start with the company he has been to a great many shows both professional and amateur. When Nelson came to judge the iShowcase Music Exhibition, a showcase for unsigned music artists produced by King Ryan Events this past Memorial Day Weekend, he had some tough decisions to make. In the end, Michigan native Jonah Stacy was Nelson’s top choice to win the showcase competition and meet with him at the Universal Music Group office for a professional consultation.
“I am currently working on Keri Hilson, Soulja Boy, Lloyd, Sammie, and Roscoe Dash as an A&R at Interscope Records and I am always looking for more talent for the label…” said Nelson. “…I came from New Mexico and earned my way up through the music business so I understand what it’s like to start from nothing. These performers are in the beginning of their career and I believe that King Ryan Events puts more effort into the showcases than any other promoter and gives these musicians an opportunity… that is why I am here.”
Showcase winner Jonah Stacy www.myspace.com/JonahStacy was equally as opportunistic as Nelson saying “…I am happy to be in the presence of people that are higher up than me…” Stacy was soulful and put forth an effort to bring about something different to the Los Angeles music scene. When asked who is musical inspirations are Stacy was quick to reply “I am inspired by John Mayer among others. I just want to create original music that makes people feel good.”
Although Stacy pulled out the victory, he was not the only showcase competitor that caught Terrence Nelson’s eye. Two other showcase competitors brought great stage presence and earned an encore selection to come back to the stage at the end of the evening. R&B singer Ashley Janae covered Whitney Houston and Pop/R&B new comer Anjel performed some very creative original material at this event.
Other music industry representatives and special guests came out to see the talent. Ricky Tan and Ke Moe of “Moe-Tan Records” helped with the judging for this showcase. KLASfm.com radio host Maryam came out to network with the talent as well as many other producers and music industry elite.
King Ryan Events pledges continued pursuit of excellence and showcase opportunities for Pop/R&B and Hip Hop performers alike. If you are a musician, or would like more information about King Ryan Events showcase opportunities, please email info@kingryanevents.com
